DENTY PIAWAI NASTITIE
–
Award-winning journalist with more than 10 years of demonstrated experience in covering politics, sports, economic, and under-represented communities. Hold a Master’s degree in Religion in Global Politics. I have strong leadership in communication, research, and professional networks across central government agencies, media NGOs, and civil societies.
When I was a child, my father told me that a journalist plays an important role to make the world a better place. My father’s words touched my heart. When every kid in my school wanted to be a pilot or doctor, at that moment I knew exactly I wanted to be a journalist.
Having been working as a journalist at Kompas for over ten years, I see that my works have influenced people and encouraged social changes. There are two examples that have demonstrated my ability to influence. First, was in 2017. Due to a sharp increase in violent sectarian or religious tensions in Indonesia, I was reminded by the holy journey that my family and I took in the Middle East countries, where I saw people live in harmony. Therefore, I published a photo-book entitled Rainbow over the Middle East’s Sky (Pelangi di Timur Tengah). I used documentary images and engaging narratives to unfold remarkable story about diversity in Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
Secondly, I succeed in covering international sports events. My work “The 2018 Asian Para Games, Athletes’ Fight for Equality” was awarded by the European Union Award for Journalists in Indonesia. The story I wrote was about athletes with disabilities who have often experienced discrimination in many aspects of life. EU considered my article as a contribution in raising public awareness about inclusive societies.
